Last week we gave you our Guide to Buying Shoes where we taught you how to distinguish quality when you step into a store. This week we want to teach you how to build the base of your footwear collection. With so many choices in every possible color, shape, and material it’s pretty hard for a guy to start from scratch. That’s why we’ve cut it down to the 5 shoes that every guy should have in their closet…

The Brown Wingtip

Crockett and Jones Clifford Wingtip, $695

This is the first shoe you should buy. The brown dress shoe is the shoe you will wear with your grey and navy trousers, and thus a shoe you will wear very often. This is also the shoe that you should not skimp on. Invest in a quality wingtip and you will not regret it. It will be the centerpiece of your footwear collection for years to come. You want something slim, but not too slim, and with gorgeous, preferably antiqued, leather. There are a few options you should check out when looking into a quality wingtip, and they will all cost you. Of course, you could go with Church’s–their reputation for quality footwear speaks for itself. There is also Barker Black, which we promote all the time–their Archdale wingtip is one of our absolute favorite shoes. But we want to point you in a different direction this time.

Scott Sternberg won the CFDA Menswear Designer of the Year for good reason, because he is a boss. Band of Outsiders is one of the best labels out, and their new collection made exclusively for Barneys shows exactly why. The “No Bunk! No Junk!” collection is awesome because it’s almost more about what Band of Outsiders is not, rather than what they are. They are known for their preppy-hipster aesthetic, so when Sternberg decided to use only black and white and do a take on power dressing, we just sat there and said, “Once again, you’re a boss.” Obviously this collection doesn’t look like a Tom Ford creation, but how often have you seen a guy go out on a limb like this? The collection does stay consistent with the Band of Outsiders aesthetic with smart decisions like using corduroy on a black suit rather than a traditional wool. As Sterberg describes it, “Very American–with the proportions that make fat guys hate me.” You can find the No Bunk! No Junk! collection at Barney’s New York.

As we just start to transition into fall, it seems like the department stores are showing signs of stuggle once again. The Choosey Beggar just gave us the heads up that Barney’s is chopping 35-50% off of select F/W ’09 merchandise. We had heard that department stores were going to keep their sales to a minimum in the upcoming seasons, but it looks like they’ll have no choice but to start slashing prices. All of this pretty much means bad for them, good for you. So head down and see if you can’t pick up some of this season’s stuff for half off.

Barneys Co-Op F/W ’09

barneys7

Few people are as good at spotting new talents as Barneys and the Co-Op is where you’ll find these guys. They’ve put together their fall looks for the catalog, which does a good job of showcasing their youthful approach. This is another example of why the lookbook is tons better than the fashion show. They can show exactly the look and feel of what they’re going for without having to deal with the constraints of the runway. Check it out for our favorite shots from the catalog.

If you’re in NYC, check it out. It started today at 8am. We’ll be going shortly and ready to give you full details, but word on the street from our boys at the Choosy Beggar is no lines, broad selection of designers that’s well organized, lame shoes. Here’s a little promo vid to get you excited.

Barneys is several notches better than Saks. With a far less cluttered and far more immaculate layout, as well as a narrower, yet much more potent selection, we can’t see why you would go to Saks first. They carry all the great brands: Prada, Armani, APC, Ralph Lauren, Brioni, and have refined, “non-guido” styles. The suits and sport coats are on the conservative side but they scream of sophistication. Of course, go to the Co-Op for a younger feel. Here they have your fill of urban/hipster brands and styles at reasonable prices. While you won’t find a great Ed Hardy selection (this is good news to us), you will find what you need for a classier wardrobe, often with a twist of city-goer, and always at the cutting edge of men’s fashion.

Barneys is especially renowned for unearthing smaller brands and bringing the best of their collections to shoppers. This summer they unveiled Burkman Bros. and Gitman Brothers Vintage lines and propelled them to fame. Or look at Andre 3000’s new brand Benjamin Bixby which was originally opened at Barneys New York. Sure, Barneys carries lots of traditional menswear, but they top the rest in bringing out smaller brands.
