Tom Ford’s film debut is nothing short of stellar. A Single Man is the story of a homosexual college professor, George Falconer (played by Colin Firth), who must contend with the loss of his lover. It is a story about how to move forward, about dealing with the past, and about making sense of a loss.

Firth, along with co-star Julianne Moore, who plays Falconer’s friend and former companion Charley, put up Oscar worthy performances. When Firth hears his boyfriend has died in a car crash, there are arguably fewer better performances by any actor in a single scene. It takes a true actor to convey the sense of loss with such honesty. Firth is among the few who can play a man who is so alone and miserable, while simultaneously so incredibly kind and decent.

With the release of his new film ‘A Single Man’, Tom Ford has cemented himself as the world’s foremost connoisseur of aesthetics. The film has been nominated for 3 Golden Globes, which isn’t too shabby on top of Ford’s countless fashion-related accolades. We’re not discreet about our affinity for Ford and his design, and that’s why we want to point you to a great interview with Terry Gross. Always elegant and insightful, Ford is always a pleasure to listen to. A Single Man is on limited release in NY and LA.

burberry-art-of-trenchBurberry today launched its website ArtoftheTrench.com, a site that celebrates their historical coat while allowing for some social networking. Burberry will constantly announce collaborations with other photographers and allow users to upload portraits of themselves in the coat.

For the launch, Creative Director Christopher Bailey commissioned the Sartorialist (Scott Schuman) to shoot street portraits of people in the coat across the globe.

Weekend TV

If you didn’t already have enough shows you should be watching, well, add one more to that list. We haven’t seen it yet so we can’t really guarantee that it will be good, but with Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson, and Zach Galifianakis it sounds like it has some serious potential. The first episode will be Sunday at 9:30 on HBO, which means you’re going to have to Tivo either this or Mad Men.
