When Michael Bastian showed his first collection for Spring/Summer of ’07, would he ever have guessed that he would be one of the major players in reviving American style? Flash forward two years late and Bastian really took his game to a new level. With sexy peak lapels and gorgeous Brunello Cucinelli cashmeres, Bastian’s clothing was all about wearability. His collections for ’09 looked like a younger fuel-injected Ralph Lauren collection, which of course makes us salivate.
The thing about Bastian’s line is that you really need to see it and feel it to appreciate it. His materials are absolutely top notch. We really like how his jackets have just enough heft to have some structure but you don’t feel like you’re trapped in them. And we would be remiss if we didn’t bring up Bastian’s perfect rugby shirts–they may not be cheap, but they sure are damn fine.
If 2009 was big for Bastian, 2010 could be the year that really places Bastian in the highest echelon of fashion as his Spring/Summer 2010 show really looked killer. It could also be the year that Bastian becomes a much more household name as he will be designing a collection for Gant, which will make his American touch a little more accessible to the common man.
