Mad Men may have helped light the fire under the ass of the newfound style Renaissance, but we’re hoping for something a little more interesting in 2010. Let us introduce you to the new look in business…
When the classic style of the 60’s faded, the new wave of corporate men didn’t know how to put together a wardrobe, and America fell into a 30+ year style slump that is only now being broken out of. Thankfully, we find ourselves in the middle of a style Renaissance. Executives have fallen for the Mad Men craze, but fashions fade, and now they’ll try to grasp on to something new. Luckily for them, we weren’t hooked on the whole Mad Men thing to begin with. Not to say we wouldn’t ever dress that way, but we usually prefer something a little more…stately.
Now this is a little more along our lines. Notice how it isn’t far removed from what Don Draper would wear, but it just does just enough to show a little sartorial flair. A slim glen-plaid suit from Brooks Brothers’ more slim-fitting 1818 collection is a great start as it is something you can use as the canvas for any number of looks. What really makes the look is the shirt and tie combo. When Mr. Draper is wearing his simple white dress shirt, you should go for something a little more bold. We’re loving a mighty cutaway collar because it’ll show that you’re not standard and boring. Now, to really complete the look, ditch the repp tie and reach for a paisley one. We like Phineas Cole’s option because at 2 3/4 inches, it’s a little more trim than most. Use a tie bar to help the tie puff out a bit, and use either a four-in-hand or Italian knot. Finally, anchor the look with something timeless. You may be making a bit of a statement, but you know what you’re doing. Reach for a pair of brown wingtips, and there are few that can match the classic appeal of Church’s.
