Perhaps its a little bold to take the tone of Sean Carter, but we want to do to the Ray Ban Wayfarer as he has done to auto tune… at least for a few years. They’re a classic staple of the prepster’s wardrobe that we’re not ready to outright reject for good, but these days, they’re just a little too prominent, and tend to reflect the wearer’s lack of creativity instead of his style.
Simply put, they have overstayed their welcome. Thankfully, the shutter shade fad has passed and hopefully the Wayfarer craze will go along with it. Their explosion back on the scene after a decade’s hiatus (and redesign) was legit for a while, but no more. Even worse are all of the knock-offs and ten-dollar versions sold at gimmicky tourist shops. Not to mention the sassy attitudes people cop while rocking the fake ones.
It’s not to say you shouldn’t hold on to your Wayfarers. In fact, we’re holding on to ours. But the arrival of fall offers an opportune time to reject these highly summery glasses for a while and explore other more creative options. Consider another popular 80s eyewear brand, Vuarnet. The French company started out as a ski goggle manufacturer, but has changed their tune and now offer some very legit models. Check out the “City” line on vuarnet.com. All great replacements for the Wayfarer. And leave the croakies at home Broseph Stalin.
