We were in Uniqlo the other day, and were amazed: this is a store that has everything, literally at your fingertips. You want khaki shorts, but don’t like just khaki and black? They have every color. You don’t like light green? They have shades of green… and every other color.
We understand. The quality isn’t the best. But look. When you’re in the market for a few trendy items, and don’t want to drop thousands on the big names because these are items that you’ll only really wear in the fall (or some other season), it makes sense to be aggressive at a store like Uniqlo. So here were our favorite items at the store, all essential to your fall wardrobe. And if you just get one of each, the grand total is $433.50. Ten items — including jackets and outerwear — for under $450.
We start with a bang. Apologies for the lousy photo, but we had to take it in stores as they didn’t have this one on their site. This trench is a real soft waterproof shell material, which brings it down to earth and keeps it form being pretentious. We suggest going a size down for a real slim fit. It comes with a belt that goes through belt loops (not shown in picture) that is worth tying, and we love the embellishments: straps on the arms and at the shoulders. The best part is how much it truly fits your form because all too often, trenches flare our and look like giant bags.
- Nylon Vest $39.50
For fall, the vest is great: put it under a jacket, over a button down, anything. But then again, don’t wear it too much — it is one of those things that you can easily become recognized for wearing all the time, because it’s a unique item. For that reason, don’t blow your money on an expensive one. Get this one. It looks good, comes in a variety of colors, is cheaper than the rest, and is thin (thank god — puffiness sucks).
After posting on this several times, we tried the tweed on in stores and loved it — as did several of our readers who have written to express much satisfaction. We’re personally fans of the double vent in back, and were extremely surprised by how soft the jacket is. At $100 bucks, this is the kind of thing you get at Uniqlo, because it works brilliantly well, looks great, fits slim, and doesn’t kill the bank on an item you’re not going to wear when it’s warm.
A great layering item: put it under a jacket or even under a plaid shirt for a really cool effect. Extremely slimming, extremely cheap, and in several colors.
Steve McQueen made this sweatshirt famous. But we bet his didn’t cost only $19.50. Try it under a golf jacket.
- Chambray Shirt $39.50
$39.50? Are you serious?
- Henley $10.50
Nope, $10.50 is not a typo. While you could be spending upwards of $100 elsewhere, this cotton guy is soft, warm, comfy, and cheap. Henley’s are great layering items: try them under button downs, over t-shirts and turtlenecks — be creative. Get several of these in an assortment of colors.
These are slim-fitting and good looking. No pics on the net available of their houndstooth guys, but definitely worth a look. Thank god for a company devoting themselves to flat front pants.
Great pieces. Pick up all three.
Scarves are great to have, but all too often they’re too heavy. This guy is great for the windy days around 50 degrees.
